AR: Music Video Analysis 3

Deconstruction of a Music Video

Foxes-Let Go For Tonight (2014)

Institution and audience

How might this video be consumed?
The audience for this music video would consume it subliminally through tertiary consumption. There is no narrative so this adds to the ambient viewing that does not force the character to watch the content, instead they view it as background content. As there is a lot of repetition of location the video does not have to have a focused viewing. As it is a pop song that was in the charts it would have made its way onto music channels such as 4Music and Vevo which would encourage the background viewing of the video rather than someone searching for the video it is forced upon them.

Consider the institutional context of this video
This will be a high budget, industrial produced video as there is a demand for high quality videos for the pop genre as they are the most widely consumed. The song is under the label 'Sign of the Times' which would have played a big role in insuring the video was of a good standard.

Genre and narrative

What are the forms and conventions in this video?
The conventions of the pop genre identified by Goodwin that are used in this video include the mid shots of the artist performing to the lyrics by lip-synching in a big white empty room. Another technique of camera size includes the close ups of the artist singing, as there are other people featured in the video this allows the audience to identify with the artist and it creates an invasive relationship, this first person mode of address breaks the fourth wall. Foxes visual motif is her eye makeup of long upper and lower eyelashes and a thick layer of eye liner similar to the 60's female mod look, which is applied to all her appearances in this video.

Is this an example of illustration, amplification or disjuncture?
This is an example of an amplified music video as the artist is shown to lip sync to the words creating a relationship between the visuals and the lyrics however there is no literal interpretation of what story is actually being described in the song shown in the video giving it a disjunctive approach.

Could this video be considered art?
Matt Hanson identified that music videos can be considered a form of art rather than used to show soft porn or as a commercial device. This music videos shows expression of innovative, experimental art as the throwing of paint across each other related to the work of expressionist's such as Jackson Pollock. Foxes has been shown as a beautiful young woman by wearing makeup and with long, voluptuous styled hair and short fitted clothing so therefore costume can be seen as a device to create fetishism that uses her attractive image to sell the product rather than for conceptual purposes.

  1. You have identified that MS and CUs are the two key shots used in this video, which help construct narrative by building a rapport between the audience and the artist. With this knowledge we can manipulate the use of similar shots within our video, to maintain a pop video look and connect the audience with the actors.

  2. Well done Amelia, your references to popular culture make your work more interesting as well as academic. You are using media terms to a very high standard. Your deconstructions are a high level four but could be improved by citing specific examples in the text more.
