ER: Responding To Our Track

Foxes - Night Owls Early Birds

1.  What is the genre of the track?  How can you tell?
Foxes follows the conventions of pop, but can also be categorised into synthpop and electronic. We can tell this by the consistent and noticeable rhythmic element, a mainstream style and a simple traditional structure.

2.  Do you think this track represents a high or lo fi video?  Why?
This track represents a high fi video, as of most pop tracks. The pop genre usually always uses hi fi videos because their characteristics are very "glitzy" and normally run on a high budget.

3.  What videos would be comparable?  Publish and label some interesting stills from the same genre.

 4.  Give an outline of a treatment.
A possible treatment for our music video would be a performance and conceptual based video with perhaps a narrative fuzz. We could introduce a hint of a situation but we don't want a full on narrative. We thought about having an amplified relationship between visuals and lyrics so that there is some sort of connection but in a much more arty rather than literal way. As the name of our song is "Night Owls Early Birds", we thought about having an animal theme to our video in reference to costume and location. We could definitely take inspiration from "Radioactive" by Marina and the Diamonds (above), because it involves the characters wearing animal masks, a very conceptual and conventional feature of many music videos, and the location is of a desert, quite a naturalistic environment.

5.  Identify suitable locations for filming particular sequences of the music.
We think suitable locations for our music videos would be very naturalistic to match the animal references in the song, so our ideas were typical locations like a field and a forest. We thought these would be a good locations for the performance aspect of our music video while we film the conceptual parts in empty rooms, drawing attention to only the object in focus.

6.  Consider grain of voice.  What characters would you use?
We chose a young, British, female pop artist as we wanted performance to be an important aspect of our video and so we needed the image of our character to fit the voice. As we are an all girl group this is a lot more convenient for us, especially as there is no necessary need for males in our video.

7.  What pro-filmic and post-production special affects would be suitable?
I think something we could experiment with is colour schemes as this song is very much about the juxtaposition between two moods (night owls and early birds) which we can represent effectively with change in colours to evoke different emotions from the audience. For example black and white represents sadness, high saturation portrays happiness and cold hues suggest loneliness.

8. Who else would you need to 'employ' to help you with this production?
It would be useful for us to have actors in front of the camera so our whole group can get a chance to be behind the camera, also, with a lot of equipment to carry, it would be helpful for us to use others as well instead of managing it all between the three of us.
